January 2010 Newsletter

Mustangs – In 2009, Texas H2Oasis™ found forever homes for four mustangs, and two more are now available for adoption. Medianoche, or Noche, is a beautiful, black filly, between 12-18 months old. She is extremely sweet, broken to lead, and lifts her feet – definitely a people-horse. Dallas is a nine-year-old, creamy-leopard, Appaloosa mare. She leads, ties, and lifts her feet. She is also green-broken to ride but needs a refresher course from a professional trainer. Call (512) 894-0105 to meet the mustangs.

Happy Birthday,
 – Formed on January 22, 2008, to provide informal, environmental education; restore/manage land and water resources; and create an eco-sanctuary for wildlife / animals, Texas H2Oasis™ celebrated its second birthday.

Barn Tour Fundraiser – Despite 33 ideas to improve it for next year, the Mare-y Christmas Barn Tour was a roaring success, with approximately 250 people in attendance. Many thanks to everyone, both volunteers and participants!

Media – We were blessed with such terrific newspaper coverage and exposure in 2009. The Wimberley View did an article about the rescued mustangs, and the Dripping Springs Century News (author Anne Drabicky) wrote about the adopters. The Hill Country Sun (author Laurel Robertson) did a centerfold on the Texas H2Oasis™ Barn Tour; the Dripping Springs Century News (author Anne Drabicky) covered the event and did a whopping article on the front and back pages; the Wimberley View did a full page story about the tour; the Southwest Horse Trader magazine (author Cean Embrey) contained excellent coverage of the Barn Tour; and now watch for an article in the upcoming March issue of the Horse Gazette, compliments of Ingrid Edisen.

Avian Sanctuary – The Master Naturalists (MNs) have approved Texas H2Oasis™ as a volunteer project, so it is a win/win situation for all concerned. MNs can earn volunteer hours helping prepare the sanctuary land, clearing brush, removing dead wood, and planting native seeds. Thanks to donations from the Home Depot of Dripping Springs, the birds have four new feeders.

Grants – Texas H2Oasis™ has applied for five grants for environmental educational funding: Marathon Oil, EPA, Lee and Ramona Bass Foundation, Toyota, and Old Hundred Foundation. Though we currently offer informal classes, with grant money, Texas H2Oasis™ can offer more structured educational opportunities, focusing on youths, who will be given the opportunities to learn about, value, and care for the environment.

Immediate Goal – Because of the recent rains in central Texas, the mustang paddock is a mud pit. To ensure the health of the mustangs’ hooves, Texas H2Oasis™ needs to improve drainage by adding several truck-loads of sand to the corral. This will prevent the mustangs from standing in mud during confinement due to pasture rotations. The cost of sand per truck-load is $385.00. If anyone would like to make a donation towards that need, it would be much appreciated. To contribute or for more information, call (512) 894-0105.

Thank you for your interest and help – and keep checking for upcoming events.
Wishing you all a healthy, happy 2010!
